Career Ready Students Complete Internships

Associated Seafoods (ASL) were delighted to have 2 Buckie High School students on site for 4 weeks in July, completing their internships as part of the Career Ready programme.

Career Ready is a UK wide charity linking employers with schools and colleges to open up the world of work to young people. Each student is mentored for two years by an employee of the company, and they also take part in masterclasses and employer-led activities to help prepare them for the future.

Associated Seafoods have worked closely with Career Ready for several years and have hosted several students as part of the programme. Over the last year, two members of our New Product Development (NPD) team, Roy and Kirsty, have been mentoring Jenna and Chelsey. During their recent internships, Jenna created a working costings spreadsheet, which will help the NPD team look at costs involved with new products as they develop them. Chelsey produced a report on green energy, looking into how different green energy options work, how efficient they are and if they’d be suitable for use by ASL.

Both girls worked extremely hard during their internships, at the end of which they had to present what they had learnt and achieved during their time on site to members of their family, as well as Buckie High School and Career Ready representatives. They had an extra challenge when we asked them to do a separate presentation to the new chair of the local Developing Young Workforce group. Both Jenna and Chelsey excelled at the presentations.

The changes in both Jenna and Chelsey’s confidence levels have astounded Roy and Kirsty – they have seen them develop and grow with more confidence in their future abilities and career paths, and knowledge of the world of work, which neither had before.

Roy and Kirsty will continue to mentor them for another year as they look ahead to university applications and future goals. ASL’s thanks go to everyone on site who has helped Jenna and Chelsey in their projects and those who have given up their time to ensure we can continue working with Career Ready.
